A deep burgundy Shelby Cobra sits low on the cobbles, its chrome grille and wire wheels catching light that has just broken through autumn leaves. Below it, a second car shimmers in the puddles, looser and bluer, as though the road is dreaming of the one above. Sushma Mahajan works in transparent watercolour, building the gloss of lacquer out of untouched paper and a fine, sure line. She is drawn to cars as moving sculpture, and to the moment a reflection blurs what is solid. For a study, a hallway, or anyone who still turns to look when something beautiful drives past.
