The lotus opens outward in stone the way it does in water - petals sculpted individually around the rim, the interior carved in radiating lines that draw the eye to the centre. It is the oldest motif in Indian craft and it survives because it still works. Solid Makrana marble, carved from one block, heavy enough that it will not travel across a table. Fruit, keys, a wallet at the end of the day, or nothing at all. Three sizes, and unusually for a decorative object, all three are genuinely useful.
