The chinar is the tree Kashmir is known by - vast, five-lobed, turning red across the valley every autumn - and here it is carved leaf over leaf across the back of the disc, inside a braided border, on a handle turned in rings. Solid walnut throughout, nothing veneered, hand-sanded and polished with nothing but wax. Ten inches overall, weighted so it sits properly in the palm. It is a functional object that behaves like an ornament: most people leave it face down on the dresser so the carving shows.
